Merry Christmas Harriet (Original)
Along about the first of December, the mayor of green Meadow would gather some volunteers, and together with the fire department they would decorate Main Street. Using evergreen branches, all tied together, they would twirl them around light poles, and over building fronts. Following this, the trees along Main Street would receive a generous helping of white and blue sparkling Christmas lights. And of course, all the store owners had set up little animated Santa’s and elves in the storefronts, all happily going about their holiday activity.
But in spite of the grand decor, everyone’s favorite place to be was around the church on Elm Street. There in the courtyard was the St. Agnes Bell tower – the most beautiful Bell tower in the whole state, possibly in the entire East Coast. It was fitted with over two dozen bells all link to some fancy computer control system inside. On December 15, the bells would begin chiming a full selection of Christmas carols and would continue doing so every evening until New Year’s.
But it was the townspeople of green Meadow though, who really made the holidays special. In spite of the hustle and bustle of shoppers searching for those few, almost forgotten gifts, each person always seemed filled with the joy of the season. No Matter how bad the last-minute crazies became, they simply love shopping for gifts. There was no question, it was the giving that was the most exciting part of the holidays.
Mildred couldn’t wait to see the expression on her grandson little face when he opened his new train set on Christmas Day. Mr. Johnson, from the general store, purchased his son the toy firetruck he had wanted. Little Emily was finally getting that very special doll she had been looking at in the window of Spencer’s department store. There was simply nothing more rewarding than those happy little face, as they filled the house with laughter on Christmas morning.
Everyone was simply happier this time of year. People always greeted others on the street as they walked by, somehow feeling more chipper and joyful than usual. There were smiles from everyone, for everyone. Christmas spirit and the magic of the season was everywhere: you could see it on the people’s faces, it was obvious in the things they all did.
